Bill Perry, Jr.

Bill Perry, Jr. is at it again, but really, he never stops.  Music is always swirling around in his head one way or the other.  Bill's new album, Phantom available on iTunes, has been getting a lot of good reviews.  In the new Oxford paper, The Local Voice,  there is an article out about Bill and his new album Phantom by Wallace Lester and he wrote, "The flow of the album is excellent.  All the instrumental tracks lead up the spooky, intergalactic closer "Operation X (Love Takes Over Me)," where Mr. Perry incants lyrics between dark layers of sound and rhythm.  [Phantom] seems to come from the future."
For me, Enough Said!
Pick up a free copy of The Local Voice today or buy it for 99 cents at http://www.thelocalvoice.net/oxford/?p=4756
Bill Perry, Jr. had an interview with The Oxford Sessions that gave a history of his life, his influences and even his favorite shows.  Get in-depth with Bill at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65mp2fG1NJ0&sns=fb
You can also see Bill perform two of my all-time favorite songs called Gangster Jazz and JoLynnGangster Jazz has a nice bounce to it and the time signature will keep you on your toes.  And JoLynn is a song that Bill wrote for his beautiful girlfriend, JoLynn.  It has a romantic melody and the jazz piano chords are uplifting.  It's a lovely song to play for your better half on a nice, lovely evening.
You can see Bill Perry, Jr. perform those songs at

Bobby Russell

Robert Russell, straight out of Urbana, Illinois, has a smooth rhythm style as his fingers glide over the strings on the bass guitar.  I love his laid-back manner and his bass lines are right in the pocket.  I had the pleasure of playing with Robert in Champaine, Illinois at WEFT radio with Dave Wright.  Robert has some Blues, Funk, and Rock songs that you can listen to at http://www.myspace.com/roberterussell
The song Damn! has a hard-rock edge with a wailing guitar that takes the lead from the beginning as the drums and bass hold the foundation.  His next song, Wild About You, has a funky, hip-hop style drum beat and a guitar signature that gives it a memorable feel.  Robert also re-made Jimi Hendrick's classic hit, Hey Joe, and it's definitely worth checking out.  Make sure you listen and download Robert Russell's music today!

The Cotton Club

The Cotton Club is a historic club that is happenin' to this day.  It wasn't very busy when I was there, but that's not the point.  I had to visit the Cotton Club while I was in Harlem and even though the building is surprisingly small, it was one of the biggest places for African Americans' to showcase their musical talents.  I can just imagine Lena Horne, Dizzy, Duke, Ella, Billie and Louie blowing the roof off the joint.  It was one of those places that exemplified this saying, "If you can make it there, you'll make it anywhere!"

According to Wikipedia, (I heart Wikipedia), The Cotton Club was a famous jazz music night club located in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City which operated from 1923 to 1940, most notably during America's Prohibition Era lasting from 1919 to 1933. The club was a white-only establishment even though it featured many of the greatest Black entertainers of the era including Lena Horne, Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Adelaide Hall, Count Basie, Bessie Smith, Cab Calloway, The Nicholas Brothers, Lottie Gee, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, and Ethel Waters.  During its heyday, the Cotton Club served as a hip meeting spot featuring regular "Celebrity Nights" on Sundays which featured celebrity guests such as Jimmy Durante, George Gershwin, Sophie Tucker, Paul Robeson, Al Jolson, Mae West, Richard Rodgers, Irving Berlin, Eddie Cantor, Fanny Brice, Langston Hughes, Judy Garland, Moss Hart, and New York City Mayor Jimmy Walker, among others.
The club reproduced the racist imagery of the times, often depicting blacks as savages in exotic jungles or as "darkies" in the plantation south. The club imposed a more subtle "color bar" on the chorus girls whom the club presented in skimpy outfits: they were expected to be "tall, tan, and terrific," which meant that they had to be at least 5 feet 6 inches tall, light-skinned, and under twenty-one years of age.  Ellington was expected to write "jungle music" for an audience of whites. What Ellington contributed to the Cotton Club is priceless and is summed up perfectly in this 1937 New York Times excerpt: "So long may the empirical Duke and his music making roosters reign - and long may the Cotton Club continue to remember that it came down from Harlem".
Musicians and vocalists who performed with the Big Bands of The Cotton Club’s glimmering early days continue to grace its stage: Al Pazant, the trumpet player, and Tim Williams, the trombone player – who played with Art Blakley and Count Basie – are just a few.

It amazes me what black entertainers had to endure just to sing a song and be heard, among other things.  I'm just glad that not only are the black entertainers getting their Just Recognitions, they are All Legends and live in Music History.

Deak Harp

Deak Harp not only has a really cool name, he's one bad ass (shut yo mouth) harp player out of Illinois.  He's the Harmonica man!  Deak and I have shared the stage together a few times and he can definitely rock the house.  He has a one of a kind sound and a beautiful personality to match.

According to Deak's bio, he started playing harmonica at age 12 when he heard a schoolmate playing blues on a harmonica.  Deak listened to British blues until his brother Bob told him about a harp master named James Cotton.  When Deak found his mentor, they traded harp cases and have had a longlasting friendship since.

Asbury park press writer, Robert Santelli, reviewed a show at the Berkeley Carteret Hotel in Asbury Park, New Jersey where Deak and Cotton were two of the featured harp players. Santelli wrote "Deak jumped into the audience and ran down the main aisles at lease twice, playing his harmonica like a man possessed".  In 1993, Deak had the good fortune and opportunity to drive for the James Cotton Band from Chicago to Miami, Florida and back. Deak later drove for the James Cotton Special Acoustic Trio featuring   James Cotton, Dave Maxwell and Luther Tucker; who was Little Walter's guitar player back in the 60s.  On the tour, Deak learned directly from Cotton who helped him with his tone on the harp and taught him how to be a band leader.  Deak was mentioned by Aquarian writer, Robert Makin, as a "Smokin' Harmonica player". Makin also honored Deak again on the sixth annual Making Waves awards" as  Best Instrument. Makin writes "it was actually a harp solo on the self-titled, produced and the stringers CD that turned me on to this guy ...SMOKIN'!!!"

The Apollo Theatre

Welcome Back, My Musical Friends!
**I'm sorry that I typed the wrong date for when The Music Zone would be back online.  Maybe next time I'll use a little invention called The Calendar.

New York was absolutely great!  It's kind of weird to think that I was there on Wednesday.  So much has happened since then, but it was an adventure I won't forget.  When I got to NY, the first place I had to see (again) was The Apollo Theatre.  When I was younger, there wasn't a Sunday evening that went by when I (and my fam) didn't catch Showtime at the Apollo.  I had to be there to help the audience boo away the worst of the worst.  And my family and I always thought it was funny that the gospel singers never got booed no matter how terrible they were.

According to Wikipedia (I heart Wikipedia), The Apollo Theater in New York City is one of the oldest and most famous music halls in the United States, and the most famous club associated almost exclusively with African-American performers. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and was the home of Showtime at the Apollo, a nationally syndicated television variety show consisting of new talent.
Ella Fitzgerald made her singing debut at 17 at the Apollo, on November 21, 1934. Fitzgerald's performances pulled in a weekly audience at the Apollo and she won the opportunity to compete in one of the earliest of its "Amateur Nights". She had originally intended to go on stage and dance, but intimidated by the Edwards Sisters, a local dance duo, she opted to sing instead, in the style of Connee Boswell. She sang Hoagy Carmichael's "Judy" and "The Object of My Affection", a song recorded by the Boswell Sisters, and won the first prize of US$25.00.

The Apollo grew to prominence during the Harlem Renaissance of the pre-World War II years. In 1934, it introduced its regular Amateur Night shows hosted by Ralph Cooper. Billing itself as a place "where stars are born and legends are made," the Apollo became famous for launching the careers of artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Jackson 5, Patti LaBelle, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Ben E. King, Mariah Carey, The Isley Brothers, Lauryn Hill, Sarah Vaughan, and Machine Gun Kelly (rapper). The Apollo also featured the performances of old-time vaudeville favorites like Tim Moore, Stepin Fetchit, Dewey "Pigmeat" Markham, Clinton "Dusty" Fletcher, John "Spider Bruce" Mason, and Johnny Lee, as well as younger comics like Godfrey Cambridge. Jimi Hendrix won the first place prize in an amateur musician contest at the Apollo in 1964. Amateur Night marked its first tie on October 27, 2010, with guitarist Nathan Foley, 16, of Rockville, Maryland, and cellist and singer Ayanna Witter-Johnson, 25, a London, England, student at the Manhattan School of Music, sharing the $10,000 prize.
(Continue)

The Apollo Theatre (continued)

One unique feature of the Apollo during Amateur Nights was "the executioner,"  (we called him The Sandman) a man with a broom who would sweep performers off the stage if the highly vocal and opinionated audiences began to call for their removal.

One rock and roll fan site, without citing its source, claims that on August 16, 1957, white performer Buddy Holly played the Apollo. Conversely, The Encyclopedia of Arkansas History & Culture claims (Caucasian) rockabilly artist Dale Hawkins "performed at the Apollo Theater in New York City two weeks before the reputed first white artists, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, arrived on the scene." Hawkins himself claimed in 1998, without specifying a performance date, "I was the first white artist to play the Apollo Theater." Another Caucasian performer Jo-Ann Campbell claims she performed November 30, 1956, and the week of May 3, 1957. A fan site claims that Caucasian performer Jimmy Cavallo and the House Rockers performed there in December 1956, in support of the movie Rock, Rock, Rock. A poster for Alan Freed's Rock 'N Roll Halloween Party on October 29, 1955, lists and shows a picture of white female rockabilly artist Lillian Briggs as one of the performers at Freed's Apollo Theater event, and it is possible other white artists may have performed at the Apollo before her. Photo evidence has recently been discovered that Charlie Barnet and his band performed at the Apollo sometime between late August and October 1952.
As of 2009 it is run by the nonprofit Apollo Theater Foundation Inc., and draws an estimated 1.3 million visitors annually.
The Jazz Foundation of America has celebrated its annual benefit concert, "A Great Night in Harlem", at the Apollo Theater every year since 2001.
In December 2010, Paul McCartney performed at the Apollo in a concert promoting and broadcast by Sirius XM Satellite Radio.

**During an appearance at the Apollo in January 2012, President Barack Obama sang the opening line of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" after which he said to Green, "Don't worry, Rev...I cannot sing like you...I just wanted to show my appreciation."**

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played the Apollo on March 9, 2012, in a private concert for Sirius XM.

The Apollo Theatre has assured that as long as there is music, it's place is set in history!

Bill Perry, Jr.

Bill Perry, Jr's New Album, Phantom, has hit the internet airwaves with a Bang and has been placed in the Top 100 Dance/Electronic albums released on iTunes!!  Number 25 to be exact!!  Congratulations, Billy!!  I'm very happy for him!   This album is just fantastic!  I downloaded ElectroSexual, Light Years From Nowhere, and Robot Mayhem, which are my absolute favorite songs.
Bill Perry, Jr. recorded Phantom with the idea of bringing electronic, hip-hop, and jazz music under one roof and he accomplished that with ease. Bill told me that it's been a wonderful experience developing this album in 2 studios (Washboard & Push Button Studios), and a wonderful journey into new electronic sounds mixed with melodies, chords, and funky ass drumbeats.

Get your copy of Phantom TODAY and like Billy said, That's Wassup!

Thank you!

Hey Everyone,
We Did It Again!
The Music Zone has had 2057 pageviews in 4 months!  Since The Music Zone has taken on a life of it's own,  I'll let you know when we reach 5000 pageviews.  I didn't know what to expect when I first started The Music Zone, but was pleased to see on the first day there were 66 pageviews.  I hoped this blog would reach many people, but it's went beyond my expectations.  Music Lovers' from all around the world wanted to know about local musicians, singers, and DJ's.  There were views from USA, Russia, France, Greece, Germany, UK, Canada, Israel, South Korea, and Jamaica!  Pretty Amazing, right?!  To me, it shows that Music Lovers' are looking for more than what the main stream record companies are pushing.  Don't get me wrong-  I like Ciara, Jay-Z, Coldplay, etc., but I believe artists' like my dad Howl-N-Madd, my brother Bill Perry, Jr., Alina Smith, Damien Wash, Lighting Malcolm, Joe Eagle, Frank "Guitar Man" Rimmer, DJ Hush, Walt Busby, Oso Negro, (Me!) and Many, Many More are just as good, or even Better in a lot of cases and I'm willing to dance my way through to let it be heard!

We Are Here To Stay, Baby!

With merging record labels like Universal and EMI taking the lions share of the music market (and money), it leaves many really talented artists' out in the cold.  I know The Music Zone is a small step to getting an artists' name "out there", but we have shown that small steps lead to Big Things and I'm Proud that we have stood up for All Music Makers'/Lovers'.
Thank You and Keep Supporting Local Musicians/Singers!

Josh Spence

Josh Spence is one talented-happenin' Harp player.  I played with Josh earlier this year at WEFT 90.1FM with Dave Wright in Champaign, Illinois.  Josh has a bad-ass harp style and makes his notes sound like a beautiful voice singing a melody.  Josh's influences are an amazing variety of legendary blues and R&B artists' like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson I & II, Little Walter, Junior Wells, Jimmy Reed, James Cotton, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Koko Taylor, Aretha Franklin, and Albert King, just to name a few.
Josh Spence is one of the founding members of The Sugar Prophets' who's sound is heavily rooted in the Blues and Rock N Roll of the 50's-70's with hints of Soul, Jam Band, Country, Jazz, Reggae, Funk, and Rockabilly.  According to their biography, The Sugar Prophets', 2011 International Blues Challenge Finalist, are an interesting amalgam of backgrounds and talent that have seemingly merged together in the right time, place, and groove. Fiery singer and harp ace Josh Spence combine with veteran guitar slingers A.J “Apple Jack” Williams and Joe Asselin (formerly of the Kilborn Alley Blues Band), along with a groovin’ rhythm section of Kevin Wilson and Vince “Fuzz” Elam to create their own sweet sound of the Blues! Their raw, intense energy and blue collar lyrics are both danceable and deep.
The Sugar Prophets' debut CD, released Jan. 2011, hit #14 and #21 on the Roots Music Reports Blues Radio Charts and Living Blues Charts, respectively. The self-titled album has also just been nominated for Best New Artist Debut Recording by Blues Blast Magazine. With their long-standing talent, passion, relatable lyrics, and a sound chock full of groove and grit, the band continues to garner new fans and devoted followers wherever they play. The Sugar Prophets' are a soul-inspiring locomotive heading straight for your door. Listen up and become a believer in this heartfelt message of The Sugar Prophets' amazing music.
Make sure you buy The Sugar Prophets' album at
